Introduction

I can’t believe they didn’t hire me because I’m ...

I woke up at 8:00am and got the news paper to look for a job. I saw that that a fast food restaurant was looking for a manager. I’ve never worked in one, but it can’t be too hard.  I took a shower last night, so,  I don’t need one today.  I grabbed my clothes off the chair and got dressed.  I looked in the mirror and my clothes were a little wrinkled and my hair could have been combed, but it’s just an application I’m going to fill out.

When I get to the restaurant I ask for an application and sit down. As I fill it out I see that I don’t have all the information about my prior jobs and it asks for experience that I don’t have.  It also tells me to attach my résumé that I don’t have.  I fill in what I can

and leave the rest blank.  When I’m done I turn it in and I’m told I can have an interview in 30 minutes.  I don’t have a watch but anyone can guess how long 30 minutes is, right?

I looked around outside for about 30 minutes, I guess, and returned for my interview.  I was told I was late about 15 minutes but he would still see me.  I told her I was sorry for being late but I didn’t have a watch.  I was called in for the interview and he tried to shake my hand but I just said, “Yo! what’s up?”.  He asked me about my job history and I told him I really don’t remember the dates that well.  Then he asked me why he should hire me and what I could do for this restaurant.  “Well, I’m good at giving orders and know how to be a boss.  I’ve never been a boss but I’ve had lots of them.”

Well it’s been a few weeks now and I can’t get a job yet.  I know I’ve done well in my interviews and have been really friendly.  Is it because I’m white, fat, or just too old for the young bosses that I talk to?

Common sense isn’t as common as you think.  What you just read
may seem funny but all of us have done some of these things too. This book is to help put back sense into common sense in getting a job.

Would I hire me?

What we are doing here is taking a real look at ourselves. This is to look at ourselves with an objective perspective.

Did I clean myself up to meet people?

Do I dress like I want this job?

Do I act like I want a job?

Do I have a watch to know what time it is?

Am I in the right mood to talk to someone about a job?

Do I know how to change my mood to help me?

Do I know how to fill out an application correctly?

Do I have all the information I need to get a job?

Can I get to my interview in time?

Do I know how to greet someone?

Do I have good manners?

Can I talk to someone without using slang?

Can I answer and ask questions in an interview?

These are all very important questions that have to be answered. Just one of these things could keep you from what you want.
